British-Made Toys, Chinese Imports and Why Safety Testing Matters

Posted by ANTHONY TROWSDALE on

Children’s Safety Must Come Before Price

When parents, nurseries and schools purchase toys, safety must be the priority. Cheap imports can be attractive, but customers should ask who made a product, which rules apply and how compliance was established. At Just Jigsaws Ltd, we believe accountability and transparency are essential.

British Manufacturing Can Improve Visibility

Buying directly from a UK manufacturer can make it easier to ask about materials, production methods, quality controls and factory practices. That does not mean British-made toys are automatically safer. Many Chinese factories produce high-quality, compliant toys; risk depends on the specific product and manufacturer, not nationality.

The Important Truth About In-House Testing

Under the UK Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, manufacturers must assess risks and follow the applicable conformity assessment procedure. In some circumstances, internal production control and self-declaration are legally permitted; independent third-party testing is not universally mandatory. Legitimate in-house testing is not a loophole or wrongdoing. The problem is inadequate testing, incomplete technical records or unsupported claims of compliance, wherever a product is made.

What Can Go Wrong When Checks Are Inadequate?

Weak safety controls may miss detachable small parts, sharp edges, unsuitable coatings, poorly secured components or missing age warnings. Manufacturers and importers should be able to demonstrate the relevant safety assessment, technical documentation and product traceability. An unsupported CE or UKCA marking should never be treated as proof that a third-party laboratory tested every toy.

Why Buyers Should Ask for Evidence

Retailers, schools and parents can ask who is responsible for the product, what safety standards apply, whether test reports are available where relevant, and how batches can be traced. Independent testing can offer additional assurance, particularly when a product or supply chain presents elevated risks.

Imported Toys and Marketplace Risks

UK product-safety enforcement has identified unsafe and non-compliant toys sold through some online marketplaces. These findings justify scrutiny of sellers and supply chains, but do not show that every Chinese-made toy is unsafe or that every British-made toy is safe. Country of origin is not a substitute for evidence.

The Just Jigsaws Approach

For more than 50 years, our family business has manufactured wooden educational puzzles in Britain. We value craftsmanship, responsible production and the confidence customers place in our name. We believe every manufacturer and importer should meet the same applicable safety requirements, without cutting corners.

Our Message

Children’s safety should never be a race to the lowest price. Ask questions, seek evidence, support accountable manufacturers and choose products with confidence. British manufacturing offers the advantage of direct relationships and traceability, but genuine safety comes from robust design, testing, documentation and compliance.
